A new comic that I'm really enjoying: Blip! Here's the first one:

I've read all 399 of them since yesterday evening. It gets a little too anime-ish for me at some points, but the characters are cute and the storyline has lots of layers! Enjoy :)

Mood: working...for real, i am.

Anyone? Anyone? Sam H and I watched Lord of the Flies last semester. I was really excited. She had no idea what it was about and just picked it on Netflix at random. You can imagine how that turned out.

Time:12:18 pm.

From Kurt Vonnegut's Slapstick:

I have had some experiences with love, or think I have, anyway, although the ones I have liked best could easily be described as "common decency." I treated somebody well for a little while, or maybe even for a tremendously long time, and that person treated me well in turn. Love need not have had anything to do with it.

Also: I cannot distinguish between the love I have for people and the love I have for dogs.

When a child, and not watching comedians on film or listening to comedians on the radio, I used to spend a lot of time rolling around on rugs with uncritically affectionate dogs we had.

And I still do a lot of that. The dogs become tired and confused and embarrassed long before I do. I could go on forever.

Love is where you find it. I think it is foolish to go looking for it, and I think it can often be poisonous.

I wish that people who are conventionally supposed to love each other would say to each other, when they fight, "Please--a little less love, and a little more common decency."

Subject:Embarrassing confession...
Time:10:16 am.
Mood: awake.
I have to admit something and I hope no one judges me for it. Yesterday I went out to lunch at Noodles with Lauren. We were having a nice enough time, catching up, whatever. out of the corner of my eye, I saw my friend Ty walk in, and with him was another guy. On second glance I saw that the second guy was Nate, who I met on Senior Trip and who is looking SO GOOD these days. I've seen him working at Sears (in the very sexy power tool department) a bunch since I've been home. Anyway, I kept sneaking glances as they were ordering, and then they sat down and of course Ty came over to say hi (I knew he would, he's very chatty). Naturally I was enthusiastic and stuff, just in case Nate was looking. Ty asked if Caitlin and I were going to the Ave (which is tonight) and I was like, "I'm not really sure, you might just see us there..." So. confession now: Is it bad that I'm more interested in going to the Ave because I think there might be a chance of seeing Nate again?

Unfortunately they sat just outside of my line of vision, so all I had to do was turn my head slightly and I could look at them...I felt I had to explain to Lauren so I slipped back into high school mode and gushed about how hot Nate is. I'm glad she agreed. Isn't that frustrating, when you're excited about something and the other person is like "eh"?

Back to Valpo this weekend...after that, time to buckle down and get ready for France!! Got an email from Sophie saying winter was going to be bad there this year, with temperatures around 15 degrees F. I emailed back and I was like, "oh how cute! Girlfriend, I come from Wisconsin. We had -3 on Christmas!" haha

Subject:The Multi-Media Comprehensive Guide to Angry Dances
Time:1:58 pm.
Alright, so Alec was watching Hot Rod the other day (semi-funny movie, worth a watch) and from upstairs I heard the song "Never" by Moving Pictures. I ran screaming down the stairs, yelling, "Who's watching Footloose??" I LOVE Footloose, and when I got downstairs, I didn't see Ren doing his angry dance, but there was a parody of it done by Andy Samberg. (It's pretty funny.) So that got me thinking about all the angry dances I have seen and I think I should just share them with you.

This is the result of a lot of time wasted on Youtube.Collapse )

Subject:hip hip hooray!
Time:11:30 pm.
Mood: content.
i used one of my gift cards from this fruitful holiday season to order wonderfalls on dvd!! a tip: if you go to barnes and noble and order something through them at the store, they will ship to your house for free, and you get the online sale price, AND if you have a mall gift card you can use it, unlike buying online! what a deal! anyway, it totally shipped today and I am thrilled!!

i was kind of sick today and it sucked. I've been dizzy on and off for the past few days. Sucks. Anywho, happy almost new year! I guess we're going to chicago as a family tomorrow...possibly to the threadless store. i really really really want to do two things within the next couple days: 1. go cross-country skiing with caitlin like old times. 2. begin work on my STA internship application. (oh i forgot, i never wrote about that...it's this amazing job with a travel company where they send you on like 7 trips over the summer. i'll tell you more tomorrow or something)

so...the end of another year. Hm. this one hasn't had too many momentous occasions...2009 perhaps?

Subject:Merry Christmas baby
Time:10:52 pm.
Mood: calm.
Hello hello, hope everyone had a good Christmas! My day yesterday was pretty crummy...I was just in a bad mood all day and cried a bunch of times over nothing. At least there was no real fighting at the Kohler Balges'. I was worried because Flossie and Ed were there. But no, and it was sooo good to see Jenny. But anyway, today was nice and I got some nice things from my parents, stuff for france, etc. And now I'm watching 3rd Rock From the Sun, which is my favorite old dorky show.

Grandma Balge gave me an adorable article on the Jonas brothers and their family's Christmas traditions. They wear their pajamas inside out on Christmas eve, even now! They say it's because then it'll snow.

Speaking of snow, the weather has been sooo snowy. I got stuck 3 times in 2 days. I've gotten pretty good at shoveling myself out of drifts.

Tomorrow I'm going to stop at the Olive Garden and explain my situation and apply, and then maybe I'll see if Caitlin wants to go cross country skiing. That would be fun.

You know it really is a miracle that we were able to celebrate with my Grandma and Uncle Tony this year. It's been a...tumultuous 12 months...and it has been literally a year since my grandma's first stroke, I think that was just after thanksgiving. Anyway, merry christmas! I love you all.

Subject:There are amazing people out there.
Time:5:07 pm.
Mood: calm.
I wish I would have seen this before election day...not that it would have changed my absentee status, but still. This is by Miranda July, the completely weird genius behind Me and You and Everyone We Know (it's a movie). She's awesome.

Here’s why you should vote: you are going to really love it, the whole strange procedure. You get to walk right into a building that you would never normally be allowed in, often an elementary school. You can pause in the hallway to look at all the weird school-art and feel the eerie vibe of hundreds of kids living their endless kid lives right nearby. Then you follow the arrows to the voting room and look at the faces of the volunteers - who are these people? There is a hush of secrecy, the voting booth is clunky, the whole thing seems fake somehow. You consider filling in all the bubbles, like you did on the SATs. But you don’t. You vote. You walk back outside feeling like you just gave blood or something, lightheaded from citizenry. You are wearing a sticker that says “I Voted” and you wish you could continue to get stickers like this throughout the day: I Ate Dinner, I Went To Sleep, I Got Out Of Bed, I Went To Work.
But alas, it is just this one thing that we all do together, savor it.

It's almost like poetry, isn't it?

Subject:I am not the most patriotic person.
Time:7:13 pm.
Mood: ecstatic.
But listen, you guys, I am thrilled that Obama won the election. It's history. I love Barack and Michelle, I love them so much. I have the highest of hopes for the United States right now. I honestly felt like I could get emotional when I found out he had won. I am proud of him, I'm proud of Americans, proud of myself.

I'm sick of hearing negative comments from Sam and Sam. No one should be a sore loser in this situation, especially not them. The only think they can do is cast their votes and hope for the best.

I am always glad to live in this country, of course. But I am often dissatisfied with the way decisions are made here, especially as I learn more and more about the way things are done elsewhere. So I get kind of excited when I don't feel that way.

Congratuations, America. You picked the right guy.

Time:9:39 pm.
Mood: giddy.

I'm at caitlin's house right now, we just got back from an afternoon at Irish Fest and it was GREAT! We saw Seven Nations and it was the best concert I've seen at Irish Fest! It was great as usual, but this year they had two new guys playing with the band. One was Victor, who replaced Dan at the fiddle player. He was GREAT and he looks like Steve-O from Jackass, so I think the young people in the audience liked him haha. The other was Will, who was playing electric guitar. Oh my giddy goodness he was AMAZINGLY beautiful. I had never seen him before, which was weird. Anyway, Caitlin and I were staring at him the entire time of course, and he was so into it...like rock and roll you k;now whatever. ANYWHO. Here's a picture Caitlin took of him:

Sorry it's a bit blurry...feel free to click on the photo to enjoy Will in all his full-size glory ; )

After the show, Caitlin and I went around the back of the stage to get her cd signed, and they were all hanging out, talking and signing stuff. When we finally got to the front of the crowd, caitlin got her cd signed and I said to William, "You guys were great and I think you're really attractive, will you take a picture with me?" And he looked really embarassed when the other guys all went, "Ohhh Will," etc etc. But he was very nice and came out from behind the counter and out to take a photo. I introduced myself and we shook hands, and Caitlin tried to take out picture, BUT MY CAMERA WAS DEAD. I am so sick of that battery dying. Anyway, she took a picture on my phone, unfortunately I don't know how to get them onto my computer or anything! I'll do my best to firgure that out. I asked him how long he's been with the band, and he said he only fills in and helps out with the bigger shows (milwaukee irish fest?? big? ok).

So yeah, he was a babe and he was really nice even when my camera didn't work and all that...Too bad I can't find ANYTHING on him online! I'm just glad we got a few pictures of him...and a little video of him on the acoustic guitar playing some traditional songs! It was awesome. Part of me wants to go back tomorrow night and see them again, but no one will want to go with me :(

Subject:French expression du jour!!
Time:10:04 am.
Ready? It is: Avoir le cafard. It means to be down in the dumps, bummy, etc.

As in "J'ai raté mon examen donc maintenant j'ai le cafard. Zut!"

J'ai le cafard un peu aujourd'hui parce que personne ne veut pas m'envoyer un email! J'suis toute seule au travail.

Also, The American Mall was pretty good. I think it's good for people who enjoyed the story and style of High School Musical but feel silly saying they like High School Musical. I have to warn you though, the lip-syncing was BAD. The music was good. The lip-syncing was bad.
